This month, treat yourself to some beautiful blooms as summer’s in full swing!

Monday, July 1, National Postal Worker Day: Have you thanked your letter carrier lately? A small arrangement tucked in your mailbox would be a welcome surprise for these hard-working public servants.

Thursday, July 4, Independence Day: Flowers add a special sparkle to your patriotic parties. Call us, and let us help you plan some show-stopping additions for the day.

July, National Ice Cream Month: Have your family or neighbors over this month for an old-fashioned ice cream social. Tuck carnations into sugar cones as sweet, ice-cream-themed centerpieces. Fun fact: The ice cream cone was introduced in July 1904.

monthly tip

Enjoy a fun, kid-friendly summer activity by dying carnations blue to add to a patriotic bouquet for the Fourth of July.

Trim the stems of fresh, white carnations under water. The shorter the stem, the faster the color will transfer.

Let children stir a liberal amount of blue food coloring – liquid or paste will work – into cool water.

Place the carnations into the dye, making sure at least several inches of stem are submerged.

As you watch the color extend into the petals, explain how flowers “drink” water through small tubes in their stems. As the water reaches the petals, it evaporates (transpires) through tiny pores, and leaves the dye behind.

The transformation will start in a few hours, but you can leave the blooms in the dye for a few days or up to a week to intensify the color.

Gather the blue carnations with red and white carnations into a patriotic posy for the holiday, or bring the three hues together with monochromatic bunches in three separate vases.
